The Wildebeest reviewing a book

Hit the Road is a colourful publication filled with photos, maps, contact addresses and, of course, descriptions of interesting places to visit. 17 regions of the country are covered from Cape Town to Kruger National Park.

The routes described are definitely not day drives but rather a collection of places to visit in or around a particular point. For each destination there is an estimation of the time that will be required to make the best of your visit. The accuracy of these estimates will largely depend on your interests and what you will do at that location. For example, the estimate for Blue Lagoon in Durban is 2 to 3 hours. I have visited it numerous times but have probably never spent more than an hour there. My interest was normally birdwatching but perhaps you would spend more time if you were to have a picnic.

Most of the location descriptions are brief and provide some of the history of the location as well as suggestions on what you might do or see. The choice of locations is interesting as some cover a whole town while others are for a specific casino.

Overall, this is a worthwhile book if you, like me, love exploring South Africa.
