In the 1880's Vryburg became the capital of Stellaland Republic after skirmishes between the Tlapin and Korana. Boer mercenaries who fought alongside the Korana were given farms in the area.
The Vryburg area is a major producer of beef in South Africa. Other significant agricultural products include groundnuts and maize.
