Afrikaans Language Monument

On Paarl Mountain, overlooking the city, there stands the impressive Afrikaans Language Monument. It was built in 1975 and was designed to celebrate the Afrikaans language and to acknowledge the other languages that influenced it.

The architect that designed it was Jan van Wijk.

The grounds surrounding the monument are a peaceful place to visit or to explore the surrounding mountains. Some rereshments are available at the coffee shop.

There are two amphitheaters that are used for various events and can be hired out by the public.

A small entrance fee is payable.

The Caledon Wild Flower Reserve, situated next to the town of Caledon, is known by a number of names including Caledon Botanical Gardens and Venster Kloof Botanical Gardens. "Venster Kloof" is the Afrikaans name for a rock in the area that looks like a window.

The reserve is well-known for its collection of indigenous plants and trees, including many species of fynbos.

A number of species of birds have been recorded in the gardens. One can also hike through the nature reserve that borders the gardens.

In September each year the gardens host a flower show.

Potjiesberg Pass

The Potjiesberg Pass is in the Western Cape near Uniondale. It is on the N9 highway.

The pass was constructed in 1962 and is in good condition. One needs to be careful as the N9 is used by numerous trucks.

The Potjiesberg Pass has outstanding views of the surrounding countryside.
