The Wildebeest's guide to South Africa

Eastern Cape Province

Afrikaans name: Oos-Kaap provinsie

The Eastern Cape has numerous beaches, game reserves and other attractions to offer the visitor. One of the attractions of the Eastern Cape is the diversity of the landscape. It is best known for its coastline which stretches for 800 km and along this unspoilt coastline are many beaches and areas of scenic beauty. A stretch of this coast line is known as the wild coast and, besides being the tradional home of the Xhosa nation, is a visitor’s paradise with beautiful beaches and great fishing.

Jeffrey’s Bay is a world-renowned surfing spot and, for the non-surfer, there are plenty of other things to do. The Eastern Cape also has a number of game parks with the Addo Elephant National Park and Mountain Zebra National Park being the most well-known. The Mountain Zebra National Park has played a key role in rescuing the Cape Mountain Zebra from the brink of extinction.

The two main cities in the Eastern Cape are Port Elizabeth and East London. Grahamstown, with over 40 places of worship, is known as the ‘City of Saints’. It is also home to Rhodes University and the annual Grahamstown Arts Festival. The province is also the location of Qunu, the birth and burial place of former President Nelson Mandela. The capital of the province is Bhisho.
